Everyone needs a brand

Everyone has a brand these days.

Lately, in my friend circles, even birthday parties are branded. Is that just me? Or are other people seeing this as well? Well, when Spencer and I decided we wanted to make a studio together one of the first questions that came up was “What is our brand?”

Our vision is to make nice games with a small team. They’re not going to blow the charts out of the water, but when people do find our games, they will be delighted. They’ll be happy we made something nice, sold it to them one time, and then went and made another game.

We had a lovely brand brainstorm and found ourselves a little bit lost for a studio name. “

At the end of that 40 grueling minutes of discussion, we settled on “Sweetened Condensed Brand”, because when it came up we both couldn’t stop laughing. It’s a bit cheeky to name your brand “Brand”. But we’re a bit cheeky, so it fits. Then the question came, how on earth do we make a logo for that?

That’s where Jason came in! Jason is an incredible brand designer that I’ve worked with before. (That word “brand” is starting to sound a bit silly to me writing this, but hear me out, Jason does good stuff). When he heard we were starting a studio, he offered to team up with us to visualize our idea.

Through many more meetings that really helped us think through what our brand really was, Jason prepared something we’re really proud to have representing our little studio. So, with a brand in hand, and a logo, (and a style guide, and actually quite a lot of documentation and examples for how to make it look good), we were off!

And here we are now. Freshly branded! But that’s enough yapping, it’s time for me to get back to making nice little games at a studio that matches my vibe. 👏

Thanks for reading, and thanks for sticking around. You’re pretty cool.

We have 4 main “Design Pillars”: Driving a tippy little train Planning your day and making deliveries Modern pixel art that feels nostalgic Connecting with delightful characters Today, let's start by talking about driving. Pillar #1 -...

"This here engine's been in the family for 100 years!" Dust stirs in the old station as Mr. Wallace, your neighbour, paces through the neglected space telling you about the train that stands there. He pops a reddish-orange copperberry in his mouth. "Copperberry?" "Sure," you say, taking one from his overflowing basket. There's bushes and bushes of them just outside the train station. More than old Mr. Wallace can eat that's for sure. More than you can eat too. "It still runs!" Mr. Wallace...
